A Conference Call for State and Local Officials

July 13, 2010

*What State Officials Must Know About the Korea FTA*

President Obama announced last month at the G-20 Summit in Toronto that his administration will work to resolve outstanding problems with Bush's Korea FTA and introduce it in Congress for a vote early next year. To date, the only fixes the administration has discussed relate to improving U.S. market access into Korea for autos and beef. There is a lot more to fix! This NAFTA-style trade pact, signed by Bush three years ago, includes the outrageous NAFTA-style foreign investor rights and their private investor-state enforcement plus the strongest dose of financial deregulation ever contained in a U.S. trade pact.

*Please join Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch director Lori Wallach on Wednesday, July 21, at 12:00 (noon, EDT) to find out how the Korea FTA's investor rights and financial deregulation provisions could affect states. You'll also hear about what you can do to help change it!*

Register for next Wednesday's conference call now! [ http://www.citizen.org/Page.aspx?pid=3653 ]

Join us for the call to find out:

- How the Korea FTA investment chapter could newly empower Korean corporations in your state to challenge state environmental, health, and financial regulations - and more - in private tribunals to demand taxpayer compensation. (We have a list of these firms - there are roughly 135 Korean corporations with around 270 establishments in the United States.)
- How the financial deregulation provisions in the Korea FTA could undermine U.S. and Korean financial regulatory reforms needed to stabilize the global economy.
- What you can do to convince the Obama administration to change these rules.

*DATE: Wednesday, July 21*
*TIME: 12:00 (noon, EDT)*
*SPEAKER: Lori Wallach, Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch*
