U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell talked about protecting American jobs during a
Charlotte gathering with U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.
"In recent years, trade agreements have not been good for our district,"
Kissell said at the Friday event, according to a news release. "I am not
anti-trade; I just want world markets to be available to American products
the way we allow other nations to sell their goods here. We must protect
American jobs, American businesses and America's manufacturing base as a
matter of economic stability and national security."
During a roundtable discussion at UNC Charlotte, Kirk answered questions
from business leaders about Korean agricultural markets, Chinese currency
and the steel industry.
Kirk, a former mayor of Dallas, has in the past supported the North American
Free Trade Agreement, which is unpopular here because of the loss of North
Carolina manufacturing jobs.
Kirk stressed the importance of leveling the playing field between the
United States and others.
"Made in America is still the most powerful brand in the world," Kirk said.
"And we are working to open markets to American exports. [Kissell] is right:
We must make things here and sell them around the world, and we have to make
our trading partners play by the rules."
Kissell, a Biscoe Democrat, faces challengers Republican Harold Johnson and
Libertarian Thomas Hill this fall in the 8th District, a 10-county district
that stretches from Charlotte to Fayetteville.
