TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's national farming lobby said Monday it will
publish in Tuesday's edition of The Washington Post a public statement
opposing Japan joining a trans-Pacific free trade bloc.
The advertisement by the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives,
known as JA-Zenchu, will call on U.S. citizens to raise voices against
creating a Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade area as the union
believes it would worsen employment conditions and widen economic
disparities.
The union will also run the ad the same day in a newspaper in Detroit,
home of the U.S. auto industry which is also opposed to Japan's
joining the TPP negotiations.
The union hopes the move, which comes ahead of the summit meeting of
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and U.S. President Barack Obama
in Washington on April 30, would raise public awareness in the United
States that there is strong opposition to the envisaged trade deal in
Japan.
Akira Banzai, who heads the union, criticized the Japanese government
for "falling forward" in seeking to join the TPP negotiations, saying
the national debate and information disclosed by the government on the
issue have been insufficient.
