Vietnam urges conclusion of TPP negotiations
Vietnam will create conditions for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
negotiations to take place smoothly and achieve expected outcomes
soon, said President Truong Tan Sang.
Sang made the statement when he had a meeting with the Acting Trade
Representative of the US, Ambassador Demetrios James Marantis in Hanoi
on April 23.
During their talk, both sides believed that Vietnam and the US will
soon reach an agreement on TPP.
Sang expressed his appreciation of the US’s support during TPP
negotiations and urged the US delegation to study the specific
investment, trade and labor conditions in Vietnam in order to achieve
consensus during the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Marantis said that the two countries need to discuss many
contents in order to complete TPP negotiations in October.
The two sides need to try to narrow the differences in their
viewpoints in the fields of goods, service and investment, the
ambassador said.
The same day, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh received Ambassador
Marantis, saying that Vietnam recognizes the importance of the TPP and
calls for relevant parties’ efforts to complete negotiations soon.
Vietnam’s participation in TPP negotiations reflects the government’s
determination to accelerate international economic integration, Ninh
said.
Ninh and his guest agreed that the two sides have achieved important
outcomes during the TPP negotiation process and will closely
coordinate in reviewing differences and discussing ways to remove them
in the next rounds.
Ninh highly valued sound development in bilateral economic, trade and
investment cooperation over the past years.
Two-way trade jumped from US$2 billion in 2001 to $26 billion last
year, and the US is now the largest export market of Vietnam, he said.
Marantis told Ninh that said the US government highly appreciated the
good results of the trade and investment cooperation between the two
countries.
As regards TPP, Marantis said both sides should make efforts to bridge
the gap in the upcoming rounds of negotiation.
