Hatch ‘hopeful’ TPA bill will be introduced this week

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch said today he is "very hopeful" that he and ranking Democrat Ron Wyden will be able to introduce a bipartisan trade promotion authority bill this week, but Wyden was more guarded about the prospect.

"We're working at it and I'm very hopeful about it," the Utah Republican told reporters after a vote on the Senate floor. "I have a good premonition that we might be able to get that done."

Hatch said he and Wyden have been "continually in touch" on the legislation, even over the two-week spring break.

"Deep down, you know, he's a good guy to work with," said Hatch, who previously has been critical of some of the Oregon Democrat's idea for revamping the bill.

Wyden, in a separate interview after the vote, said the two sides have "made progress obviously" in the talks, but gave little information beyond that.

"We're just going to stay at it. We worked all through the weekend," Wyden said. "We'll have something to say when we're ready to talk."
