[CTC] ICYMI: UFCW comes out swinging on trade

In case you missed it, on Wednesday the UFCW announced its opposition <http://www.ufcw.org/2015/04/15/ufcw-announces-strong-opposition-to-fast-track-and-the-tpp/> to fast track and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
 
Writing in The Hill <http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/economy-budget/238797-trans-pacific-partnership-will-harm-middle-and-working>, UFCW International President Marc Perrone issued a warning to both political parties, calling on every member of Congress to oppose the TPP and the fast-track legislation that would make it possible to pass the TPP.

“In the end, while we may not be able to change every mind, we will remember those elected officials who stood with America’s workers by voting for jobs and against another destructive trade deal,” he wrote. “More to the point, we join with the AFL-CIO and other unions that refuse to support any member of Congress that decides to put narrow self-interests above the interests of hard-working families.”
 
Writing for Vox, Jonathan Allen called the UFCW’s defection “an erosion of Obama’s trade coalition <http://www.vox.com/2015/4/15/8421741/Obama-trade-food-fight>.”
 
In a column in National Journal <http://www.nationaljournal.com/2016-elections/could-trade-deal-be-hillary-clinton-s-next-food-fight-20150415>, Ron Fournier described the UFCW’s announcement as “a blow to Obama” and signaled it would play a role in the 2016 election. “Hillary Clinton must choose between her president and her base on the latest trade deal in Congress—and now she has more food for thought,” he wrote.
 
In addition, the UFCW took out a full page ad <http://www.ufcw.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/UFCW-Politico-Ad-TPP-4.16.15.pdf> in today’s edition of Politico highlighting its opposition to unfair trade.
