Did President Obama tacitly dismiss modern-day slavery overseas just to preserve his trade deal??

Recent reports indicate that there may have been political meddling by trade proponents in the compilation of an important State Department publication that rates governments on their efforts to combat human trafficking. This not only delegitimizes the TPP negotiating process, it raises serious red flags about the integrity of our democracy!

This Thursday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will be holding a hearing to ask Secretary Sarah Sewall about the Trafficking in Persons Report recently released. Friends of the Earth and other groups will be there demanding answers and government transparency!

JOIN us for an emergency rally this Thursday morning outside the Senate hearing to tell President Obama that deliberately downplaying modern-day slavery just to pass a trade deal is THE LAST STRAW!

While the Administration just won a lot of authority to negotiate the TPP by getting fast track, Congress put in place restrictions on dealing with countries that have the worst records in combating human trafficking. Malaysia happens to be one of those. Or was--until last week.

On the eve of the latest TPP negotiating round, which took place last week, the State Department took Malaysia -- a participant in TPP negotiations -- off its human rights blacklist. This ranking upgrade follows the recent and disturbing discovery of mass graves of human trafficking victims along the Thai-Malaysia border. The State Department’s justification for Malaysia’s ranking upgrade doesn’t hold water.
We need answers!

RSVP and help spread the word to DC-based supporters and followers on Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/events/1599684470293530/> and Twitter.
