Sessions: No rule this week on stand-alone TPA bill

6/16/15 6:35 PM EDT
House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions said his panel would not be issuing a rule this week for debate on a stand-alone trade promotion authority bill, despite earlier talk that they might.

“It in fact has not presented itself as an option for us,” Sessions said at the end of Rules Committee meeting, during which he announced the panel was not expected to meet again this week. “Obviously a lot of speculation, a lot of ideas, did not materialize for us.”

Sessions said House Speaker John Boehner continues to engage in a number of discussions to find a path forward for the bill, which failed last week after the House overwhelmingly rejected a companion measure to renew Trade Adjustment Assistance.

Earlier today, the House approved a rule that would allow Republicans to bring the TAA measure back to the floor for vote any time before July 30.

Sessions said he remained optimistic the TPA bill would eventually reach Obama’s desk. “We must stay after this Republican agenda,” he said.
