Urge your U.S. Representative to vote no on Fast Track trade authority!

Mark,

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote soon on legislation to provide Fast Track trade authority to the administration on trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The TPP negotiations are highly secretive. They will affect millions of people.

[http://action.umc-gbcs.org/images/stopfasttrack.jpg]We deserve the right to know what is being proposed for a 12-nation pact that will set the rules governing an estimated 40% of the global economy. These rules will not only dictate tariff levels, but also energy and environmental policies, medicine patents, financial regulations, “Buy Local” preferences, food safety, Internet protocols, consumer labeling and the like.

Congress would only be allowed to vote the TPP up or down — with no changes.

TAKE ACTION JUNE 3!

Please call your U.S. Representative at (888) 410-0619 next Wednesday, June 3, to urge a NO vote on Fast Track. (When calling ask for your Representative’s office.)

United Methodist Social Principles on Trade and Investment

We affirm the importance of international trade and investment in an interdependent world. … Broad-based citizen advocacy and participation in trade negotiations must be ensured through democratic mechanisms of consultation and participation (¶163K, The Economic Community, 2012 Book of Discipline).

Resolution on The United Methodist Church, Justice, & World Hunger

Enable church members to … become advocates of trade policies that alleviate economic disparities between rich and poor countries while protecting labor and human rights; environmental, health, and safety standards; respecting the need for agricultural and food security. ("#4051", 2012 Book of Resolutions).

Please remember to take action June 3: Call your U.S. Representative at (888) 410-0619 next Wednesday, June 3, to urge a NO vote on Fast Track.

Blessings and Peace,
