Leaders of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) countries will convene a meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Manila next week for the first time since reaching a deal in Atlanta on Oct. 5, the White House announced Thursday (Nov. 12).

"This will be the first time that the leaders of the various TPP countries will be able to come together since the completion and publication of the text, so the leaders will have an opportunity to mark this enormous progress and to demonstrate their shared commitment to move forward with TPP," Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes said at the White House's Thursday press briefing.

Additionally, Rhodes said, President Obama will hold separate bilateral meetings with the leaders of Canada, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia during his trip to Asia, which also includes a stop in Kuala Lumpur on Nov. 20 for the East Asia Summit. He indicated TPP will be discussed at each of these meetings.

Obama is first traveling to Turkey on Nov. 15 for a meeting of G20 leaders, and will arrive in Manila on Nov. 18 for the APEC meeting. Following the East Asia Summit, he will begin his journey back to Washington on Nov. 22.

Obama's meetings with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be the first since each took office.

In Malaysia, Obama will tour a refugee detention center. Malaysia's record of keeping victims of human trafficking in detention centers instead of allowing them freedom of movement has been noted by critics of the TPP. The administration continues to fight off allegations that it upgraded Malaysia's status in the State Department's annual human trafficking report because of TPP.
