Winning TPP Votes
The White House continues its efforts to win over votes for the newly
completed TransPacific Partnership, with President Obama hosting a meeting
this evening with House and Senate Democrats to
discuss trade (WTD, 10/20/15).
The Administration is looking for bipartisan support for TPP, like it got
earlier this year for Trade Promotion Authority, White House spokesman Josh
Earnest told reporters.
Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said the Administration is trying to make
the case to Congress about the benefits of the TPP. The reception so far
has been “warm,” she said, particularly among lawmakers who voted for TPA.
Administration officials are fanning out across the country to tout the
benefits of the TPP for each state, Ms. Pritzker said during a conference
call targeted to Oregon regional reporters. Commerce released a report
yesterday outlining what the TPP will mean to Oregon. The state will
benefit from the elimination of tariffs on some of the top products it
sells to TPP countries – information and communications technology,
chemicals and forest products, she said.
Meanwhile, President Obama also reached out to newly elected Canadian Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau – who raised some concerns about the TPP during his
campaign. The two discussed the need to move forward with implementing the
TPP, noting its importance to boosting economic growth and supporting jobs
on both sides of the border, according to a White House statement.
