Trump tells Mexican, Canadian leaders he won't terminate NAFTA right now

BY VICKI NEEDHAM - 04/26/17 10:42 PM EDT
President Trump told Mexican and Canadian leaders on Wednesday that he will renegotiate a trade deal between the countries, instead of scrapping the three-nation pact.

Trump spoke with Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to assure them that he will move forward to rework the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) amid reports that the U.S. wants to withdraw from the 23-year-old deal.

“President Trump agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time and the leaders agreed to proceed swiftly, according to their required internal procedures, to enable the renegotiation of the NAFTA deal to the benefit of all three countries,” according to a readout of the calls provided by the White House.
Trump said, “it is my privilege to bring NAFTA up to date through renegotiation” and pledged “the end result will make all three countries stronger and better,” according to the White House.

Word came out earlier Wednesday that the Trump administration is weighing whether to issue an executive order that would eventually lead the United States to leave the 1990s-era trade pact with Mexico and Canada.

It was the second time in two days that Trump and Trudeau made contact.

The Canadian statement Wednesday was more vague than the one released after Tuesday night’s call on softwood lumber and dairy, as tensions over trade grow between the two partners.

“The prime minister spoke this evening with President Trump of the United States,” the Canadian government said in a statement.

“The two leaders continued their dialogue on Canada-U.S. trade relations, with the prime minister reinforcing the importance of stability and job growth in our trade relations.”
