McConnell: Senate will consider Lighthizer nomination next week

The Senate next week will take up the nomination of Robert Lighthizer to be U.S. trade representative, Senate Majority LeaderMitch McConnell <https://cd.politicopro.com/member/51216> said today, improving the chances the veteran trade attorney will be approved in time to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation trade ministers meeting May 20-21 in Hanoi.

"For the information of all senators, the comeback votes on Monday night are the confirmation of Heather Wilson to be secretary of the Air Force and cloture on the nomination of Scott Gottlieb to head the FDA," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "Then we plan to move on to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer as well."

An attempt to filibuster the nomination could slow it down for a few days, but it was not clear whether any senator would object to moving directly to a vote on the nomination.
