Trade Update Call with the AFL-CIO’s Celeste Drake

Last month, the President announced a global tariff on steel and aluminum imports and retaliatory tariffs on Chinese imports to compensate for China's theft of U.S.-owned intellectual property. Wall Street's hair is on fire and pundits keep trying to scare working families with the specter of a trade war, but the truth is that tariffs are a necessary tool of trade enforcement designed to protect U.S. economic and national security.

Last week, the President announced a minor renegotiation of the Korea FTA. Although it contains a tariff extension on light trucks and a hard cap on Korean steel exports to the United States, both of which will help protect U.S. jobs, it also included a giveaway to Big Pharma and failed to address the important issues of labor, investment, and rules of origin.

Meanwhile, the Administration is rushing to finish NAFTA renegotiations. We continue to advocate that NAFTA renegotiation must not put labor rights in the backseat while putting corporate interests up front.

Please join AFL-CIO Trade & Global Policy Specialist Celeste Drake for a briefing on the latest on trade policy this week. Here are the details:
