Rules to govern the digital economy are being negotiated at this very moment within a number of potentially template-setting new trade agreements. These rules are often presented simply as a means of helping small- and medium-sized businesses reach customers over the Internet, when in reality, they are being driven by some of the biggest corporations on the planet and are one of the top goals of corporate lobbyists.  The implications of these rules are far reaching.

Please join us for an online briefing exploring the different ways digital trade rules could affect your organization’s membership:

JOBS & THE ECONOMY: Duncan McCann, Senior Researcher at the New Economics Foundation and author of the International Trade Union Confederation report on “Free Trade Agreements, Digital Chapters and the Impact on Labour,” will present on how these rules can affect outsourcing, labor rights and expansion of the gig economy.  

RACIAL JUSTICE: Amba Kak, Director of Global Strategy & Programs at AI Now Institute and Fellow at NYU Law’s Engelberg Center, will present on the increasing use of algorithms in policing and other areas, the existing and potential biases within these programs and the need for transparency.

CONSUMER RIGHTS: Burcu Kilic Sites, Director of Public Citizen’s Digital Rights Program, will present on how proposed digital trade rules undermine data privacy, corporate accountability and other consumer issues.
