— U.S. and U.K. officials are planning to exchange market access offers for the first time in the next round of negotiations, which are set for September. It’s a sign that negotiators are getting more heavily into the details for a free trade deal.

U.S., U.K. TO EXCHANGE FIRST MARKET ACCESS OFFERS IN SEPTEMBER: The next round of talks between the United States and the U.K. on a free trade agreement is set for early September, the U.K. Department for International Trade said Wednesday <https://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=4b849678da7c23031bc5fa2d984a9701fe86d1e38639c50c1e93556c7696f6c11ee22ffc9554e6bf7e37aaea0e0a3b8c>.

The two sides will exchange market access offers for the first time, DIT said, meaning negotiators will start getting into the nitty gritty of how quickly to eliminate tariffs for most products, and what goods, if any, they want to exclude from full market openings.

Where we’re at: USTR has not issued a statement after the third round of talks, which wrapped up last week. But in its statement, DIT said negotiators held their first “text-based” discussions on rules-of-origin, a tricky area governing how much U.S. and U.K-origin content must be in a product, such as automobiles, to qualify for duty-free treatment under the pact.

“There were 33 sessions held in the round, covering 21 different workstreams. Positive progress continues to be made in many of the areas covered by an agreement,” DIT said.
