As many join the inspiring protests against racism, we enter another month of an unprecedented global pandemic. The data revealing the U.S. health and economic impacts of COVID-19 reflect the grave injustices moving people to the streets.

As Public Citizen's President Robert Weissman wrote recently:

"The visceral inhumanity of one person taking the life of another rightfully draws our outrage, but the silent violence of racist policy and structural racism kills countless people of color every day… We don’t have complete data on the racial makeup of those who have contracted and been killed by COVID-19, but black and brown people have been disproportionately affected."
We will continue taking the streets this week, but sadly we must also continue to navigate our way out of this health and economic crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare that in the world’s richest country, we cannot make or get the basic goods we need to manage a crisis. The Trump administration’s mismanagement has made it worse. But underlying structural weaknesses would have undermined even a competent president.

The hyperglobalization delivered by decades of corporate-rigged trade pacts has outsourced U.S. manufacturing capacity – with five million U.S. manufacturing jobs lost. This crisis has made clear that revitalizing U.S. manufacturing is valuable to all of us.

Doing so will require better trade policies and a smorgasbord of domestic policies that promote that goal.

Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is a leader in identifying the perils to our economy and national resilience from the hollowing out of our manufacturing capacity and how that has contributed to income inequality. She also is a leader in promoting solutions to this mess.

Owen Herrnstadt (Chief of Staff to the International President, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) is a national expert in the array of pro-manufacturing policy tools sometimes called “Industrial Policy,” and recently authored an Economic Policy Institute blog that beautifully summarizes these commonsense policies to rebuild U.S. manufacturing.
