BRUSSELS — Washington is unlikely to conclude a trade agreement with the U.K. before it knows the future terms of trade between the EU and U.K., the EU’s trade chief Phil Hogan said Wednesday.

“All of the [negotiating] partners I think have indicated, including South Korea today, that they’re prepared to wait to see the outcome of the Brexit negotiations before they come to any conclusions about their bilateral agreement” with Britain, Hogan said at a video event with the Institute of International and European Affairs, a think tank.

“I suspect it will be the same with the United States. They will want to see the issues that the United Kingdom are dealing with the European Union first, because after all we are 450 million people in the European Union,” Hogan said. “There is about 60-70 million people in the United Kingdom. Size matters in trade.”

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and his U.K. counterpart Liz Truss have vowed to push forward talks on a free trade agreement “at an accelerated pace.” Britain sees the talks as a way to pile pressure on Brussels, while Washington hopes to secure a larger foothold in Europe <https://pro.politico.eu/news/118640> for its food standards.
