On eve of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial, health, development and human rights advocates held an online press conference to discuss how WTO talks have veered away from waiving intellectual property barriers that have blocked billions of people’s timely access to life-saving COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.

If the WTO proves so unfit for purpose that its waiver mechanism intended specifically for such emergencies will once again be blocked by a few wealthy countries doing Pharma’s bidding. The same shamefully  occurred in the late 1990s during the HIV-AID crisis and as a result millions died. Now as then, the pathways and tactics to ensure people have access to live-saving medicines must escalate as failure is not an option with millions of lives and livelihoods at stake.
