The 117th Congress featured an unprecedented array of bills aimed at reining in the Big Tech giants that dominate many sectors of our economy. Legislation sponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Rep. Mark Takano, and colleagues would protect our privacy, end monopolistic abuses, defend gig workers, fight discriminatory AI and algorithms, and counter online surveillance. Fighting Big Tech abuses was a major focus of the president’s State of the Union speech.

Big Tech’s goal is to permanently crush such efforts by securing binding international “digital trade” rules that limit, if not outright forbid, governments from enacting or enforcing domestic policies to counter Big Tech abuses. Our investigation unpacks exactly what is at risk. 

Big Tech lobbyists are trying to rig IPEF and also global, Latin American, European, and other trade deals. If successful, this “Trojan Horse” maneuver would threaten our economy and democracy by making “trade” agreements a mechanism to lock in  Big Tech’s monopolies and abuses.
