South Korea: Fourth IPEF negotiating round will be held in Busan
April 28, 2023 at 3:27 PM
A fourth Indo-Pacific Economic Framework negotiating round will be held in Busan, South Korea, later this year, Korea said following a state visit to Washington, DC, by the country’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol.
No dates have yet been set for the round, according to spokespeople for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
“The United States and the ROK are working to advance IPEF and achieve high-standard commitments across all four Pillars. For its part, the ROK plans to host an IPEF negotiation round in Busan later this year,” the White House said in a fact sheet <https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/04/26/fact-sheet-republic-of-korea-state-visit-to-the-united-states/> this week following Yoon’s meeting with President Biden on Wednesday.
The Korean government noted the same in one of its readouts of the visit <https://www.breakinglatest.news/news/%EC%A0%84%EB%AC%B8-adoption-of-joint-declaration-on-the-70th-anniversary-of-the-rok-us-alliance-washington-declaration-technical-dialogue-etc/>, adding that Busan would host the fourth negotiating round.
Asked about the upcoming round, the MOTIE spokesperson said in an email that “the schedule has not been finalized yet, and we are currently in the process of coordinating with the relevant parties.”
The third IPEF negotiating round is set for May 8-15 in Singapore. Earlier this year, Fiji’s trade minister said the talks could conclude before the end of the year <https://insidetrade.com/node/176527> following a total of six negotiating rounds.
Trade ministers from IPEF countries will gather later in May in Detroit following a ministerial meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation countries.
