Subject: China’s devastating rare-earths squeeze: Rush Doshi explains what
it means and what the U.S. must do next
Hello all - I do not normally push my podcast to these lists, but this
China rare earths interview w/ Rush Doshi (Biden NSC China Director & CFR
China Initiative lead now) is so informative and compelling that I wanted
to share. I personally learned a lot about the source of the mess and how
to remedy it. Yours, Lori

Hello, friends —
China’s recent move to cut off global access to rare-earth minerals
<https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckg1jr18z4ko> and magnets could be
cataclysmic. We suspect a lot of people do not know just how dire the
impact could be – shutting down manufacturing of cars, planes, trains,
computers, phones, energy-generating equipment, most electronic goods, and
defense systems.
In the latest episode of the Rethinking Trade podcast, *China expert Rush
Doshi – former National Security Council Director for China and
Taiwan* and *Director
of the China Strategy Initiative at the Council on Foreign Relations *–
explains why China’s rare earths threats are a “brazen and outrageous use
of Chinese economic coercion” on an unprecedented scale. Sunday’s news that
China may agree to a one-year delay
<https://www.france24.com/en/americas/20251026-us-china-agree-trade-framework-rare-earths-soybeans>,
pending this week’s Trump–Xi summit, does not remove the underlying risk but
rather confirms how much leverage China has consolidated thanks to
successive U.S. policy mistakes.
*Rush explains the urgent actions needed immediately to limit our
vulnerabilities*, and *he and Lori discuss how we got into this dire
situation* — with China’s near-monopoly on rare earths creating a
chokepoint over the basic inputs that keep the modern economy running.

October 30th, and keep you updated.
