Biden promises Buy American enforcement
The Enquirer . July 20, 2010
Vice President Joe Biden has outlined new efforts to enforce the Buy
American provision of the federal stimulus program.
The details came in a letter dated July 15 to U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer,
D-Bedford Township, who in June contacted Biden's office about concerns that
some companies receiving stimulus funds were importing products from China
and marketing them as being made in the U.S.
Full Spectrum Solutions, a Jackson lighting company, contacted Schauer
alleging that several of its competitors were misrepresenting their product
and winning projects funded by the stimulus.
In his letter, Biden said the U.S. Department of Energy has contacted those
companies asking for verification that their products are made in the U.S.
Those responses are now being reviewed, the letter said.
Other actions outlined in the letter:
. The U.S. Department of Energy issued an alert to stimulus grantees
reminding them of their responsibility to follow Buy American requirements.
. A Buy American complaints hotline has been added to Department of Energy
websites.
Full Spectrum Solutions President and Chief Executive Officers Mike Nevins
said today that the vice president's involvement sends a clear message to
companies and grantees not to ignore the stimulus rules.
"It's going to get rid of the ambiguity," he said. "The municipalities and
the people receiving the grant money are certainly going to be a lot more
diligent."
