State human trafficking report coming Monday

The State Department announced today that it will release its long-awaited annual report on human trafficking at 10 a.m. Monday.

The report is expected to upgrade Malaysia from the tier of worst-offending countries. Some members of Congress have criticized the anticipated move as little more than politics because the trade promotion authority law bars the fast-tracking of trade deals with “tier 3” human traffickers. Malaysia is in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which negotiators are looking to wrap up in weeklong talks in Hawaii that started today.

Secretary of State John Kerry will host a ceremony at the release of the report where he will honor eight people who have had an impact on the fight against human slavery.
