SustainUS #StopTPP Advocacy Fellow

SustainUS is seeking a smart, ambitious and creative fellow to campaign to #StopTPP. The fellow will recruit volunteers in critical Congressional districts, mobilize young people to engage in the TPP debate, and design actions targeted at combating a narrative of TPP inevitability in the lame duck session. This is a 33 hrs/wk position through November 20th.

TPP State of Play

The rest of 2016 will be absolutely critical for the fight against the TransPacific Partnership (TPP).

Because of the incredible work to make the TPP toxic and controversial, it is highly unlikely that the pact would be brought to Congress for a vote before the "lame duck" session of Congress in November/December. While the votes to pass the TPP do not currently exist, it is critical to continue to pressure Members of Congress now to oppose the pact in order to decrease the likelihood that the TPP will be put to a vote and, if it does come to a vote, to decrease the chances that it will pass.

About the Position

The fellow will split their time between two primary areas of work. First, the fellow will recruit, develop, and manage volunteers from youth climate activist networks and college campuses in five to eight Congressional districts. The second area of work will be mobilizing these volunteers through actions designed to garner media attention on the continued injustice, controversy, and opposition to TPP. Examples of such actions include: birdogging Members of Congress indistrict at campaign events, organizing around proTPP events like the Administration’s TPP Roundtable tour when in those districts, and organizing two postelection demonstrations preempting a possible lame duck session vote on TPP. These roles would also involve reaching out to local and national media and coordinating with other environmental organizations and trade movement actors. This position would be managed by the SustainUS Advocacy Fellowship Coordinator.

Qualifications

● Experience in birdogging and other organizing tactics
● 2 years experience in organizing at the local or national level
● Knowledge and passion for climate and trade issues such as the TPP
● Ability to communicate clearly
● Ability to work in a fast paced campaign
● Ability to work effectively in a coalition
● Knowledge in media and communications work
● Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to recruit and maintain volunteers

Volunteer Development Responsibilities (50% of time)

● Recruit five volunteers per each of five to eight Congressional districts.

● Identify key college campuses and connect with youth climate movement and environmental

spaces/communities in target districts.

● Train all volunteers in birdogging tactics and educate them on the principles of trade justice

and talking points on why we must #StopTPP.

Mobilization Responsibilities (50% of time)

● Design and execute at least one birdogging action in each of five to eight Congressional districts to get undecided Members of Congress on the record as opposing the TPP

● Develop media plans for actions and follow up (ie. press releases, action recordings, press lists).

● Design and execute two actions postelection to elevate attention to the corporate beneficiaries of TPP and its continued relevance to constituents of key congressional districts during the lame duck session.
